Things to do with your kids in the winter in San Francisco, CA

INDOOR FUN WITH THE KIDS IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

As beautiful as the City of San Francisco can be, the winter is an uncomfortably damp and chilly season for a visit to this famous metropolis.

The daylight hours are short; the temperature may not reach 50 degrees Fahrenheit; heavy rains are common; and a cold, clammy fog called “Tule Fog” can occur overnight and linger throughout much of the day. The best attractions for you and your young family are those which keep you all warm and comfortable as your children engage in a day of indoor discovery. The most popular of these attractions is a full day at the world-renowned California Academy of Sciences.

THE CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

The California Academy of Sciences, located at 55 Music Concourse Drive, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco hosts a rich, kid-friendly variety of ongoing and seasonal exhibits at the Steinhart Aquarium, the Morrison Planetarium, and the Kimball Natural History Museum. Many are suitable for infants and toddlers. Some events, activities, and exhibits may have recommended minimum age restrictions, so check the Academy’s website at http://www.calacademy.org/ for further information.

Ongoing exhibits at the California Academy of Sciences include the African Hall, Altered State: Climate Change in California, the California Coast, Cool Globes, Islands of Evolution, the Morrison Planetarium, the Philippine Coral Reef, Rainforests of the World, Science in Action, The Living Roof, The Swamp, Water Planet, the Discovery Tidepool, and Early Explorers Cove.

Winter seasonal events include Penguin Feedings, Coral Reef Dives, Swamp Talk, The Fragile Planet Planetarium Show, and the Bugs! 3D Show.

The Academy provides a caf and The Moss Room restaurant for all appetites and all ages.

Admission to the Academy is $24.95 for adults; $19.95 for ages 12 to 17, $19.95 for students and seniors aged 65 and up with proper ID; $14.95 for children aged 7 to 11; and free for kids aged 6 and younger.

The Academy is free to the public on the third Wednesday of each month.

Admission fees include all exhibits and shows, and you’ll save $3 off the price of a general admission ticket if you show proof of having taken public transportation to the Academy. The general hours of operation are 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday, and 11:00 AM 5:00 PM on Sunday. Some events may have special start and stop times.

The Academy can be reached at 415-379-8000 or info@calacademy.org. Online tickets may be purchased from 24 hours to 90 days in advance.
